The USB port enables a computer that does not have an Ethernet Network Adapter to connect to the cable modem via USB port, and access the Internet. The standby button allows you to temporarily disable the connection between the cable modem and PC, while leaving the modem active and registered on the HFC network. If you do not want your PC to be accessible from the Internet at all times for security reasons, but wish to leave it running, simply use the standby button.
